Buick Regal Named NADAguides’ 2011 Car of the Year

Recognized for Performance, Styling, Fuel Efficiency, Price Point and Cost of Ownership

LOS ANGELES – The 2011 Buick Regal won the Car of the Year Award from NADAguides, a leading provider of vehicle pricing and information, at the Los Angeles International Auto Show on Wednesday.

The Buick Regal beat 10 other contenders based upon a combination of factors, including performance, styling, design, fuel economy, safety features, cost of ownership and price point.

“The Buick Regal has had a revolutionizing effect on Buick,” said Troy Snyder, director of product development for NADAguides. “The brand is definitely on the right road and it’s clear that the Regal is just the beginning of Buick great vehicles to come.”

In September, when NADAguides honored Regal with its Car of the Month Award, the publication praised the sedan’s fuel-efficient 182 HP direct-injection 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine and Four-Link Independent Rear Suspension for providing a smooth ride “fit for a king.”

NADAguides also noted Regal’s use of Bluetooth® connectivity, OnStar, USB port for MP3 devices, and voice-activated navigation as clear indications that “Buick knows all about modern advanced technology.”

"The NADAguides Car of the Year award confirms the growing momentum building around Buick," said John Schwegman, U.S. vice president of Buick & GMC Marketing. "The Regal delivers a dynamic driving experience that competes with the best import sport sedans in the mid-size sport car segment. Moreover, this smart, sleek, top-safety-rated car is helping to attract new customers to the Buick brand.”

Based in part on customer demand for the new Regal, Buick’s retail sales have grown 50 percent in 2010 as of October, with 39 percent of Regal customers coming out of a non-General Motors’ make.

Regal also is a semifinalist for the 2011 North American Car of the Year awards, as voted by a jury of 50 automotive journalists from the United States and Canada. The sporty sedan has award-winning DNA, being based on the Opel Insignia – recipient of 31 prestigious awards, including the 2009 European Car of the Year.

Memorial Golf Tournament Draws Big Crowd, Donations

In perfect weather conditions, the Ronny Massey/Relay For Life Memorial Golf Tournament is a big success in its first year.

CITRONELLE, AL, NOVEMBER 2010 – Nearly 100 golfers participated in the inaugural Ronny Massey/Relay For Life Memorial Golf Tournament held Saturday, November 13, 2010, at the Mill Creek Golf Course in Citronelle. The event raised over $13,000, with proceeds going to the Ronny Massey Scholarship Fund and American Cancer Society Relay For Life.

“We are extremely thankful to have such caring and giving support throughout the community”, said Walt Massey, co-founder of the event and owner of Walt Massey Automotive. “We look forward to the continued success of the event for years to come”.

Begun in 1985, the American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.

This first year tournament was an overwhelming success, thanks to

many surrounding areas, together with individual and family donors,
helped make this effort a great event for everyone. Included in the
tournament activities were winning team and individual player prizes,

More Good News For The Buick Regal

MUS News and World Report - Regal ties for #1 ranking with BMW 3-Series Good news. In its ranking of Midsize luxury sedans US News and World Report ranks Regal as tied for #1 with the BMW 3-Series!

Buick Regal - What the Auto Press Says

The 2011 Buick Regal ranks 1 out of 19 Upscale Midsize Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 27 published reviews and test drives of the Buick Regal, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The 2011 Buick Regal offers midsize sedan buyers a sporty option that can compete with some upscale models.

Buick has been undergoing a renaissance lately, with the redesigned LaCrosse bowing to almost-unequivocal reviewer praise last year. Now, the 2011 Buick Regal is hitting the market, and while it competes for near-luxury buyers with the LaCrosse, reviewers say it's aiming for a very different segment of that market: drivers who like a little sport in their sedans.

While the LaCrosse appeals to buyers who want a quiet touring car, Autoblog says, "For the first time in its history, the Regal is truly worthy of being called a sports sedan." Not only that, Autoblog, like other reviewers, argues that the Regal can compete with upscale midsize sport sedans like the Acura TSX and Audi A4.

While most critics assert that the Regal lives up to its sporting pretensions, others question if the Buick brand, which is historically known for sedans that handle like yachts and are popular with the early-bird special crowd, is strong enough to pull buyers over from imports. Still, reviewers say that even though the Buick brand may not be strong enough to pull buyers in, overlooking the Regal would be a mistake.

Among midsize cars, the Regal shines with performance that balances fuel economy and power, handling and ride comfort. Reviewers are impressed with the handsome exterior and comfortable interior. All in all, if you're shopping midsize sedans, reviewers say that the Regal should be on your short list.

If you're shopping for premium feel, reviewers almost dare you to put the Regal against cars like the Acura TSX, Lexus ES and Audi A4. All three are more expensive and have more cachet than the Regal -- however, many reviewers say the Regal can take them all on. That means that if you’re willing to sacrifice brand recognition you can get a better car at a lower price by opting for the Regal.

Details: Buick Regal

The Buick Regal is an all-new model for 2011. For its initial rollout, the Regal is available only in its top-of-the-line CXL trim; next year the base CX and middle CXS trims will be available. The Regal enters the market with a 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine, but a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder will be available in late summer 2010. A performance tuned GS model will be available next year. The Regal is based on the Opel Insignia (which is available only in Europe) and shares some components with the well-liked Buick LaCrosse. However, the Regal is smaller and sportier than the LaCrosse.

"What it is, it turns out, is a very well tuned, near-luxury sport sedan

that, in terms of sheer driving pleasure, surpasses anything else in its

class made in Detroit these days, not to mention imports like the Acura

TSX and the Lexus ES350."--Automobile Magazine

"Put another way: If you like your old Buick, this ain't it. But if you

like the kind of work Acura has done with the TSX, the all-new Regal

will be a pleasant surprise."--AutoWeek

"Like the Buick LaCrosse, the Regal is far removed from the floaty-boat

reputation that has cursed the brand, along with an aging demographic

that Buick is desperate to change. The Regal now looks and performs in a

class-competitive manner. "--Car and Driver

"The $26,995 Regal CSX is sleek, stylish and comprehensively equipped,

with suavely European road manners. The $29,495 Regal Turbo is a

wonderfully subversive sport sedan whose punchy, 220-hp blown Ecotec

four and supple, yet buttoned-down, chassis puts Acura's homely TSX on

notice, and seriously makes you wonder whether an Audi A4 is really

worth the money."--Motor Trend

"Buick hopes customers looking at an Acura TSX, Lexus IS or an Infiniti

G37 will consider the Regal. I think that's optimistic but not out of

the question, though it will take a while."--Chicago Tribune

"The Regal is a good-looking, excellent-handling midsize sedan that

packs a lot of content for its price, with just a few drawbacks."--

Cars.com

"So let's see what we have here; A gorgeous, fun-to-drive, quick,

comfortable, well-equipped American sedan built with the quality of its

German competitors... and it's a Buick. Who knew?"--Jalopnik

"On paper, the Regal Turbo’s just-under $30k price point puts it in

competition with the base, four-cylinder TSX while offering power closer

to the $35k TSX V6. "--The Truth About Cars

Regal Performance - 9.0 (Excellent)

Car reviewers are impressed with how the 2011 Buick Regal performance.

"General Motors engineers put their sport sedan right in the sweet spot,"

says AutoWeek "With plenty of nimble handling and good turbo power (220 hp,

258 lb-ft, 7.5-second 0-60 mph), combined with a reasonably quiet and relatively smooth ride." Read More

Regal Exterior - 9.2 (Excellent)

Most reviewers think that the Buick Regal is a stylish sedan that easily keeps pace with the competition in the looks department. Motor Trend calls the Regal "a terrific-looking car: modern, characterful, sporty, with great stance and artfully sculpted sheet metal." Read More

Regal Interior - 9.0 (Excellent)

Reviewers don't have trouble finding nice things to say about the 2011 Buick Regal's interior. Autoblog says, "Like its exterior, the Regal's cabin is also engaging." That engaging cabin features comfortable seats, high-quality materials, zen-like quietness and a long list of available features. Read More

Regal Safety - 10.0 (Excellent)

Though the federal government hasn’t crash-tested the 2011 Buick Regal yet, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named it a “Top Safety Pick.”

The 2011 Buick Regal is covered by a four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty and a five-year/100,000 powertrain warranty.

'Chevy Runs Deep' in the 2010 MLB World Series

New marketing campaign tells the story of an all-American brand

2010-10-27

DETROIT -- Chevrolet is launching new advertising tonight during the first game of the 2010 Major League Baseball World Series. The campaign is inspired by a new brand theme, “Chevy Runs Deep,” and features important new Chevrolet products such as the Cruze compact car and the Volt electric vehicle with extended-range capability.

“The World Series is a defining piece of American culture,” said Joel Ewanick, vice president, U.S. Marketing. “It has a story, a soul and a connection to every generation – just like Chevrolet. You can’t get a better fit than Chevy and baseball. It’s the perfect opportunity to talk about Chevy’s commitment to America and showcase our newest cars, trucks and crossovers.”

Created by Goodby, Silverstein and Partners, the new campaign features a :60 Chevrolet brand “anthem” spot that spans 100 years of Chevrolet history, including a peek into the brand’s future; three :30 spots that illuminate Chevy’s connection to defining moments in American life; a :30 spot related to the brand’s long-time relationship with baseball, and a :30 spot starring the Volt.

Television and movie star Tim Allen will be “the voice of Chevrolet” in the new ads, a role he debuted in the first Cruze ads which began airing in September.

In addition to television, “Chevy Runs Deep” will have a presence in digital, print, out-of-home and social media during the World Series.

“As we prepare for Chevrolet’s centennial in 2011, we’re beginning a new chapter in Chevy history,” Ewanick said. “This is a brand that has touched all Americans. We’re proud of our heritage and eager to let people know how we can create a better future through vehicles like the Cruze, Volt and other fuel-efficient models that will be coming soon, including a new sub-compact car and the Spark. We believe this campaign provides a great platform to tell that story.”

“We are incredibly excited to be part of this effort,” said Jeff Goodby, co-chairman, Goodby, Silverstein & Partners. “Chevy has always had a unique connection with our country. Today, Chevy delivers more relevant products and innovation to more people than any other car company.”

Don't Let Car Troubles Ruin Your Holiday Travels

After summer's heat but before winter's chill, the months of autumn present an ideal time for car service and maintenance.

As the holidays approach, motorists should make certain their vehicle is up to the rigors of winter travel. Autumn has traditionally been a busy time for car-care activities. Whether you do your own maintenance or depend on the pros, fall service let's you undo the wear and tear of summer's tough conditions while getting ready for colder weather ahead.

The following tips from the experts at the non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) should give you a road map to fall car care. According to officials at ASE, "Cold weather will only make existing problems worse. A breakdown, while never pleasant, can be deadly in the winter."

First things first--Read your owner's manual and follow the manufacturer's recommended service schedules.

Engine Performance-Get engine driveability problems (hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.) corrected at a good repair shop. Cold weather makes existing problems worse. Replace dirty filters-air, fuel, PCV, etc.

Fuel-Put a bottle of fuel de-icer in your tank once a month to help keep moisture from freezing in the fuel line. Note, too, that a gas tank that's kept filled helps prevent moisture from forming.

Oil-Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual-more often (every 3,000 miles or so) if your driving is mostly stop-and-go or consists of frequent short trips.

Cooling System-The cooling system should be flushed and refilled as recommended. The level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically. (A 50/50 mix of anti-freeze and water is usually recommended.) DIYers, never remove the radiator cap until the engine has thoroughly cooled! The tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps, and hoses should be checked by a pro.

Heater/Defroster-The heater and defroster must be in good working condition for passenger comfort and driver visibility.

Windshield Wipers-Replace old blades. If your climate is harsh, purchase rubber-clad (winter) blades to fight ice build-up. Stock up on windshield washer solvent-you'll be surprised how much you use. Carry an ice-scraper.

Battery-The only accurate way to detect a weak battery is with professional equipment. Routine care: Scrape away corrosion from posts and cable connections; clean all surfaces; re-tighten all connections. If battery caps are removable, check fluid level monthly.

A word of caution: Removal of cables can cause damage or loss of data/codes on some newer vehicles. Check your manual. Be sure to avoid contact with corrosive deposits and battery acid. Wear eye protection and rubber gloves.

Lights-Inspect all lights and bulbs; replace burned out bulbs; periodically clean road grime from all lenses. To prevent scratching, never use a dry rag.

Exhaust System-Your vehicle should be placed on a lift and the exhaust system examined for leaks. The trunk and floorboards should be inspected for small holes. Exhaust fumes can be deadly.

Tires-Worn tires will be of little use in winter weather. Examine tires for remaining tread life, uneven wearing, and cupping; check the sidewalls for cuts and nicks. Check tire pressure once a month. Let the tires "cool down" before checking the pressure. Rotate as recommended. Don't forget your spare, and be sure the jack is in good condition.

Emergencies-Carry gloves, boots, blankets, flares, a small shovel, sand or kitty litter, tire chains, a flashlight, and a cell phone. Put a few "high-energy" snacks in your glove box.

End of Summer Marks Perfect Time for Car Care

Preventive maintenance now can help ensure worry-free driving this winter.

The vacations are over, the kids are back in school and cooler evenings are coming (hopefully). Take advantage of the lull to prepare your vehicle for the winter ahead, advise the pros and the non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). Breakdowns, never convenient, can be dangerous in cold weather. The following tips from ASE should give parent and student alike a road map to fall car care.

First things first Read your owner’s manual and follow the manufacturer’s recommended service schedules. There are usually two schedules listed: normal and severe.

Engine Performance—Have engine driveability problems (hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.) corrected at a good repair shop. Cold weather will make existing problems worse. Replace dirty filters—air, fuel, PCV, etc.

Fuel—Put a bottle of fuel de-icer in your tank once a month to help keep moisture from freezing in the fuel line. Note, too, that a gas tank that’s kept filled helps prevent moisture from forming in the first place.

Oil—Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual—more often (every 3,000 miles or so) if your driving is mostly stop-and-go or consists of frequent short trips.

Cooling System—The cooling system should be flushed and refilled as recommended. The level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically. (A 50/50 mix of anti-freeze and water is usually recommended.) If you’re doing your own work, allow the radiator to cool down completely before removing the cap. (Newer vehicles have coolant reservoirs.) The tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps, and hoses should be checked by a certified auto technician.

Heater/Defroster—The heater and defroster must be in good working condition for passenger comfort and driver visibility.

Windshield Wipers—Replace old blades. If your climate is harsh, purchase rubber-clad (winter) blades to fight ice build-up. Stock up on windshield washer solvent—you’ll be surprised how much you use. Carry an ice-scraper.

Battery—The only accurate way to detect a weak battery is with professional equipment. But do-it-yourselfers can do routine maintenance. Scrape away corrosion from posts and cable connections; clean all surfaces; re-tighten all connections. If battery caps are removable, check fluid level monthly.

A word of caution: Be sure to avoid contact with corrosive deposits and battery acid. Wear eye protection and rubber gloves. Note too that removal of cables can cause damage or loss of data/codes on some newer vehicles so refer to your manual for instructions.

Lights—Inspect all lights and bulbs; replace burned out bulbs; periodically clean road grime from all lenses with a moistened cloth or towel. To prevent scratching, never use a dry rag.

Exhaust System—Your vehicle should be placed on a lift and the exhaust system examined for leaks. The trunk and floorboards should be inspected for small holes. Exhaust fumes can be deadly.

Tires—Worn tires will be of little use in winter weather. Examine tires for remaining tread life, uneven wearing, and cupping; check the sidewalls for cuts and nicks. Check tire pressure once a month. Let the tires “cool down” before checking the pressure. Rotate as recommended. Don’t forget your spare, and be sure the jack is in good condition.

Emergencies—Carry gloves, boots, blankets, flares, a small shovel, sand or kitty litter, tire chains, a flashlight, and a cell phone. Put a few “high-energy” snacks in your glove box.

Keeping Your Vehicle in Tune with the Environment

Car care is definitely a win-win situation. Besides helping the environment, a properly maintained and operated vehicle will run more efficiently, will be safer, and will last longer-up to 50% longer, according to a survey of ASE-certified Master Auto Technicians. The following tips should put you on the road to environmentally conscious car care.

* Keep your engine tuned. A misfiring spark plug can reduce fuel efficiency as much as 30%. Follow the service schedules listed in your owner's manual. Replace filters and fluids as recommended.
* Check your tires for proper inflation. Underinflation wastes fuel-your engine has to work harder to push the vehicle. Wheels that are out-of-line (as evidenced by uneven tread wear or vehicle pulling) make the engine work harder, too. Properly maintained tires will last longer, meaning fewer scrap tires have to be disposed.
* Keep your air conditioner in top condition and have it serviced only by a technician certified competent to handle/recycle refrigerants. Air conditioners contain CFCs-gases that have been implicated in the depletion of the ozone layer. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, almost one third of the CFCs released into the atmosphere come from mobile air conditioners; some simply leaks out, but the majority escapes during service and repair-so it's important to choose a qualified technician.
* Do-it-yourselfers: dispose of used motor oil, anti-freeze/coolant, tires, and old batteries properly. Many repair facilities accept these items. Or call your local municipal or county government for recycling sites. Never dump used oil or anti-freeze on the ground or in open streams.
* Observe speed limits. Mileage decreases sharply above 55 mph.
* Drive gently. Avoid sudden accelerations and jerky stop-and-go's. Use cruise-control on open highways to keep your speed as steady as possible.
* Avoid excessive idling. Shut off the engine while waiting for friends and family. Today's vehicles are designed to "warm up" fast, so forget about those five-minute warm ups on cold winter mornings.
* Remove excess items from the vehicle. Less weight means better mileage. Store luggage/ cargo in the trunk rather than on the roof to reduce air drag.
* Plan trips. Consolidate your daily errands to eliminate unnecessary driving. Try to travel when traffic is light to avoid stop-and-go conditions. Join a car pool.

Remember, how your car runs, how you drive it, and how its fluids, old parts, and tires are disposed of all have serious consequences on the environment.

Auto Service Goes High-Tech

Increasingly, automotive repair and service is becoming a high-tech profession, note officials with the non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). Old images die hard, but yesterday's mechanics have become today's technicians, complete with hand-held computer diagnostic tools and a wall full of credentials attesting to their abilities.

In a recent poll of ASE-certified automotive technicians, over four-fifths said they used a computer on the job, more than two-thirds said they owned a computer at home, and over half said they had access to the Internet.

"The profession is being revolutionized," notes ASE President Ronald Weiner. "Brute force has been supplanted by brain power. If you don't think so, just look under the hood of one of today's sport coupes or SUVs. This is rocket science-or very close to it. Today's auto technicians need to be master diagnosticians, well versed in electronics, and have smooth customer service skills." Auto technicians face components and repairs virtually unheard of a generation ago: on-board computers, electronic fuel injection, and antilock brakes, to name but a few advances.

Fortunately, the requirements on motorists are much less. According to ASE, a major component of satisfactory auto repair is good communication between shop and customer.

ASE suggests that consumers read their owner's manual to become familiar with the basic systems and the service intervals. Once at the repair establishment, be prepared to describe the symptoms; but do not suggest a specific course of repair. Do not be embarrassed to ask questions or definitions of technical terms. Don't expect an on-the-spot diagnosis, but ask to be apprised of the problem, course of action, and costs before work begins. And, be sure you understand policies regarding diagnostic fees, labor rates, return of old parts, and guarantees, ASE advises.

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) was founded in 1972 as a non-profit, independent organization dedicated to improving the quality of automotive service and repair through the voluntary testing and certification of automotive technicians.

ASE-certified technicians wear blue and white ASE shoulder insignia and carry credentials listing their exact area(s) of certification. Walt Massey Automotive is proud to have these top technicians!

Chevrolet Awards Detroit Pitcher New Corvette for Great Performance

DETROIT – Chevrolet awarded Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga a 2010 Corvette convertible, recognizing his outstanding performance on and off the field.

Galarraga retired 26 consecutive Cleveland Indians batters on Wednesday evening. The 27th and final batter, Jason Donald, hit a routine ball in the hole between first and second base. Tigers’ first baseman Miguel Cabrera fielded the ball and threw to Galarraga, who stepped on first base, apparently before Donald touched the base and was called safe.

Galarraga kept his cool, returned to the mound and retired the next batter to record a one-hit, 3-0 shutout, throwing just 88 pitches.

GM North American President Mark Reuss, who presented a Chevrolet Corvette to Galarraga at today's game against the Cleveland Indians, said the way the pitcher had handled the incredible events deserved to be recognized regardless of what record books would ultimately show.

Reuss said he had known the Ilitch family, owners of the Detroit Tigers, his whole life and the family has always been a great supporter of General Motors.

"It is only fitting we help give back for all the Ilitches have done for Detroit and to celebrate Armando’s pitching and sportsmanship during one of the most captivating evenings in Tigers history.”

Buick Named Top Popular Brand in AutoPacific’s 2010 Vehicle Satisfaction Awards

Detroit – Buick was recognized as the top-rated popular brand in AutoPacific’s 2010 Vehicle Satisfaction Awards announced Thursday. The Vehicle Satisfaction Awards are unique because they are based on owner’s overall satisfaction with their vehicle.

"We are excited to be named the top popular brand in AutoPacific’s 2010 Vehicle Satisfaction Awards,” said Roger McCormack, director of marketing for Buick. “This recognition is important to us because it is based on our owner’s satisfaction with their vehicles, and this award is proof that our efforts to continuously improve our vehicles are paying off.”

The LaCrosse was the second-highest ranked vehicle by owners in the premium mid-size car segment, and the Enclave and Lucerne ranked in the top five vehicles in the luxury crossover SUV and large car segments.

The 2010 Vehicle Satisfactions Awards are determined by more than 42,000 surveys that are completed by owners of new cars and light trucks in the United States in the first quarter of 2010. As an industry benchmark, the study measures overall satisfaction an owner has with their vehicle. AutoPacific is a Southern California-based market research firm.

Buick is currently in the midst of a modern brand transformation that is defined by Buick’s brand characteristics including sculpted designs, luxurious interiors, quality, premium technology and refined performance. The LaCrosse is continuing the momentum started by the Enclave and the Regal sports sedan is poised to extend the Buick line-up. Buick has experienced seven consecutive months of year-over-year sales increases.

Silverado HD Bests the Competition with 21,700 Pound Towing and 6,635 Pound Payload Ratings

DETROIT – Through ongoing development and testing, the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD capability ratings have been increased to 21,700 pounds of towing, and 6,635 pounds of payload. Based on these ratings, the Silverado HD will offer heavy-duty truck buyers the most power and most capability available in the segment.

According to Rick Spina, GM Full-size Truck global vehicle line executive, the increased ratings are a result of exceeding the original performance targets for the Silverado HD:

“Our focus has consistently been on delivering customers the most capable heavy-duty trucks in the market. The first set of capability tests confirmed that the team had exceeded the payload and towing targets by a significant margin. Ongoing testing demonstrated a clear opportunity to increase the true capabilities of these trucks. Even pulling a combined weight of nearly 15 tons seems easy behind the wheel of a 2011 Silverado HD 3500 with the proven Duramax Diesel.”

To certify increased payload and towing capacities for the 2011 Silverado HD, engineers conducted a battery of tests.

Based on extensive testing at maximum gross combined weight rating (GCWR) to validate the durability of the powertain, drivetrain, and brake components, the GCWR is increased to 29,200 pounds.
Based on further testing in varied terrain, grades, and climates while pulling the maximum trailer weight to confirm predictable and stable handling, the maximum 5th-wheel towing capacity was increased to 21,700 pounds, and conventional towing capacity increased to 17,000 pounds.
After higher-strength steel for cargo box cross sills was specified, the team conducted additional testing hauling maximum payloads to test the stronger cargo box and rear-axle components. As a result, the maximum payload has been increased to 6,635 pounds.

Based on these improved capacities, the 2011 Silverado HD possesses segment-leading capability in horsepower, torque, conventional towing, 5th-wheel towing, and payload.

Starting production next week, it becomes the most capable heavy duty pickup on the market.

“We encourage consumers to test drive the Silverado HD against competitive models,” said Spina. “Based on our test results, we are confident the Silverado HD will prove to be the best choice for real-world towing and hauling needs.”

Is GM Doing Better Than Reports Suggest?

Is GM doing better than first quarter numbers suggest?

Expressed in percentages - Stats are always hard to nail down
(5/6/2010)

If you just read the headlines after the close of the first quarter of 2010, you would have learned that Ford sold 25 percent more vehicles in the first quarter of 2010 than it did in the same period of 2009 - good news however you look at it. GM on the other hand reported overall sales growth of just 7 percent. Not bad, but, at least on the surface, pales in comparison to the Ford numbers.

According to analyst Rich Smith, writing in the financial advisory column known as The Motley Fool, this simple comparison does not tell the complete story.

According to Smith, GM's comparison to Q1 in 2009 included all the vehicles sold under the discarded brands of Pontiac, Saturn, Hummer and Saab - which experienced a drop of 95 percent against the first quarter of 2009.

Smith also points out that if GM had taken the tack that many other retailers do in reporting sales more aggressively - in this case only reporting retail sales for comparison purposes - the remaining GM brands of Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and GMC experienced an improvement of over 33 percent in Q1/2010. So, if we can coin a term - "same brand sales" - GM's same brand sales improved 33 percent, while Ford's same brand sales only (only?) increased 25 percent.

So after taking its medicine in the form of a bitter pill called bankruptcy, GM escapes virtually debt-free and with half the brands. It does appear after examining the sales results from this different angle that the reduction in brands has strengthened those that remain - and that GM's performance in those brands alone may have surpassed the bright Ford sales reports.

Child Safety - Keep It 'Top of Mind'!

You place your children's safety at the top of your priority list. You shopped for the safest car when you started a family. You read up on car seats for kids and figured out which one worked best for you and your family. You even took your car and car seat to a seat-checking station to let an expert check and approve of your handiwork.

But did you know there are other dangers in and around your vehicle that could seriously harm your child?

Problem: Children die each year from heatstroke, after being left alone in a vehicle.
You live by your daily routine and it helps you get things done. Be extra careful, though, if you have to change any part of that routine. This is more likely to happen when you, or caregiver who helps with your children, forgets that a child is in the back seat. This can and does happen when you break a well-established routine.

Disasters happen quickly

At other times, you are on your way home and realize you need to stop in at the store and pick up one or two things for dinner. So, you leave your child unattended, thinking, "I'll just run into the store for a minute." Even cool temperatures in the 60s can cause the temperature to rise well above 110° Fahrenheit inside your car. The inside temperature can rise almost 20 degrees within the first 10 minutes.

Some children die in hot cars after climbing into an unlocked vehicle without an adults' knowledge. Once in the vehicle, they may become confused by the door opening mechanism or trapped in the trunk, and unable to get out before heatstroke occurs.

Prevention Tips

■Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle.
■Do not let your children play in an unattended vehicle. Teach them that a vehicle is not a play area.
■Never leave infants or children in a parked vehicle, even if the windows are partially open.
■Make a habit of looking in the vehicle - front and back - before locking the door and walking away.
■If you are dropping your child off at childcare, and normally it's your spouse or partner who drops them off, have your spouse or partner call you to make sure the drop went according to plan.
■Ask your childcare provider to call you if your child does not show up for childcare.
■Do things to remind yourself that a child is in the vehicle, such as:
■Writing yourself a note and putting the note where you will see it when you leave the vehicle;
■Placing your purse, briefcase or something else you need in the back seat so that you will have to check the back seat when you leave the vehicle; or
■Keeping an object in the car seat, such as a stuffed toy. When the child is buckled in, place the object where the driver will notice it when he or she is leaving the vehicle.
■Always lock vehicle doors and trunks and keep keys out of children's reach. If a child is missing, check the vehicle first, including the trunk.
■If you see a child alone in a hot vehicle, call the police. If they are in distress due to heat, get them out as quickly as possible. Cool the child rapidly. Call 911 or your local emergency number immediately.

What you need to know, now

■Vehicles heat up quickly - even with a window rolled down two inches, if the outside temperature is in the low 80s° Fahrenheit, the temperature inside a vehicle can reach deadly levels in only 10 minutes.
■Children's bodies overheat easily, and infants and children under four years of age are among those at greatest risk for heat-related illness.
■Children's bodies absorb more heat on a hot day than an adult. Also, children are less able to lower their body heat by sweating. When a body cannot sweat enough, the body temperature rises rapidly.
■In fact, when left in a hot vehicle, a young child's body temperature may increase three to five times as fast an adult. High body temperatures can cause permanent injury or even death.

Dangers of extreme heat

■Symptoms of heatstroke: Warning signs vary but may include: red, hot, and moist or dry skin, no sweating, a strong rapid pulse or a slow weak pulse, a throbbing headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, being grouchy, or acting strangely.
■If you see a child alone in a hot vehicle, call the police. If they are in distress due to heat, get them out as quickly as possible. Cool the child rapidly. Call 911 or your local emergency number immediately.

Tires - No Respect!

While it’s easy to overlook those four patches of rubber called your tires, performing a few simple checks can yield better fuel economy and improved vehicle handling. Since most tire damage and wear is a result of driving on tires that are improperly inflated, tire experts suggest checking your air pressure once a month.

Maintaining proper tire pressure is important for many reasons other than reducing the potential of a flat tire or a blowout. In order to achieve optimum handling from your vehicle, from everyday driving to making emergency maneuvers, tire pressure needs to be at the proper inflation level. Even a tire that doesn’t appear to be low on air can result in reduced vehicle handling and excessive tread wear.

Tires that are not at the correct air pressure will also increase the rolling resistance (the friction that occurs when an object rolls) of the vehicle. Under-inflated tires, for example, result in increased rolling resistance and therefore require more energy (or fuel) to move the vehicle, which negatively impacts fuel economy. According to the Department of Energy, keeping tires inflated properly improves fuel economy by approximately 3.3 percent. Tires that are over-inflated result in reduced levels of handling performance because less rubber is in contact with the road.

Improper inflation puts unnecessary stress on your tires and can result in excessive or uneven wear. When this happens, it compromises the ability of the tires to perform, and often results in premature tire wear—and the necessity to replace them sooner than expected. Tires with excessive or uneven tread wear can also lead to an accident. (JD Power & Associates)

Used Cars - Here Today, Gone Tomorrow

Retail stores such as hardware, sporting goods, grocery, pet supplies and others have delivery days, some call them "truck days", when new merchandise arrives. Trade-ins, auctions, consignment, whatever the avenue, we get fresh inventory constantly. Trucks, cars, vans and sometimes boats and cycles pass through our lot each week and customers may not even know it. If you are in the market for a quality pre-owned vehicle, check our inventory several times through the week to stay updated with the latest available items. Just imagine, the car you've been looking for may have just arrived as you were reading this article! Don't miss it.

How To Improve Gas Mileage

While it is always wise to conserve natural resources, the price of gasoline has made even the most wasteful people think twice. Whatever your motivation, here are some fuel economy tips from the pros at the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and Walt Massey Automotive.

Monitor tires. Under-inflated tires or poorly aligned wheels waste fuel by forcing the engine to work harder. (Let the tires cool down before checking the air pressure.) Out-of-line wheels, as evidenced by uneven tread wear, should be aligned by a professional.

Remove excess weight. Remove unnecessary items from the vehicle. Store only essentials in the trunk. Less weight means better mileage.

Consolidate trips and errands. Some trips may be unnecessary. Also, try to travel when traffic is light so you can avoid stop-and-go conditions.

Avoid excessive idling. Shut off the engine while waiting for friends and family.

Observe speed limits. Speeding decreases your miles per gallon.

Drive gently. Sudden accelerations guzzle gas. Anticipate traffic patterns ahead and adjust your speed gradually.

Use windows and air conditioning wisely. Your mileage should improve if you keep the windows closed at highway speeds, since air drag is reduced. This is true even with the air conditioning on-assuming that the system is in good working order. But turn the air conditioning off in stop-and-go traffic to save fuel.

Keep your engine "tuned up." A well-maintained engine operates at peak efficiency, maximizing gas mileage. Follow the service schedules listed in the owner's manual. Replace filters and fluids as recommended; have engine performance problems (rough idling, poor acceleration, etc.) corrected at a repair facility. Given today's high-tech engines, it's wise to have this type of work done by auto technicians who are ASE certified in engine performance.

These conservation tips will not only save gasoline, they'll help extend the life of your vehicle. Win-win, indeed. Contact our Service Department at Walt Massey Automotive now for a gas-saving checkup.
